U.S. Candy Industry Supports FDA’s New Guideline for Lead

(Vienna, VA - November 27, 2006) - The U.S. candy industry today expressed its support for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) new guideline for allowable lead levels in confectionery. The new guideline, which has been enacted following a year-long public review, sets a guidance level for lead in confectionery at 0.1 parts per million (ppm), an 80 per cent reduction from the current limit.

In commenting on the FDA proposal, Larry Graham, President, NCA said, “The FDA has sent a clear message that all candies sold in the United States, regardless of country of origin, must meet the same, stringent safety standards. Thanks to rigorous manufacturing processes, U.S. candy companies already are in compliance with this guideline and the industry supports FDA’s action.

“By establishing a uniform national standard that the agency will enforce, the FDA is ensuring uniform, nationwide product safety while avoiding the consumer confusion that would result from a patchwork of different local and state-level regulations.”

Past efforts by FDA and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) have centered on eliminating lead exposure from a variety of sources with leaded paint, dust and imported ceramics being the most widespread, significant sources of lead in the U.S.
